Director of Why Not? Trust

£40,000- £45,000 (based on 37 hours)

Care leavers face significant challenges ranging from lack of support networks to financial worries, stress over employment/education and problems with unsuitable or unstable accommodation.

The Why Not? Trust for Care Experienced Young People is a charity set up to support long term connections and relationships between young people with care experience and the people who matter to them, with a view to helping them overcome these challenges.

In this role you will have the opportunity to lead, develop and grow the Why Not? Trust into a valuable support function that will help to guide and safeguard the future of care leavers across Scotland.

The charity is in its infancy. You will need to draw upon your experience of working in 3rd Sector, fundraising, strategy and project management in order to vitalise and grow the initiative into a “go-to” resource for individuals transitioning from care.

Whilst you will have the opportunity to utilise the expert knowledge of a number of senior individuals with vast experience in the sector, understanding of the care system and the issues facing care leavers is something that is essential to this role, as is the ability to run individual projects under the Why Not? banner; reporting your successes directly to the Board of Trustees.

Working at a senior level in the social work sector, involvement in youth work, national councils, youth organisations and community development, would provide valuable experience relevant to this post.

If this is you, we would very much like to hear from you.

This is a real opportunity for you to be part of the growth and continued development of the Trust and in turn have a real impact in better supporting the care experienced community in Scotland.

About Why Not? Trust

The Why Not? Trust for Care Experienced Young People was registered with OSCR as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) in 2018.

A key objective is to support long term connections and relationships between young people with care experience and the people who care for them.

The organisation grew out of an initiative that originated as part of Care Visions Children’s Services, which continues to provide financial and “in kind” support to the charity as part of their commitment to corporate social responsibility.

It is overseen by a Board of Trustees who have many years of experience working in social services with young people.

Why Not? works with young people to help them plan for their transition from care, identifying “connectors” who will continue their relationship with the young person as they move on.

It also supports young people, including young parents with care experience, to develop their own community networks.

The Why Not? Trust has already won awards for innovation from SIRCC and Scotland Excel and the Board of Trustees is keen to see the Trust grow it’s reach and influence to offer more young people access to this approach to continued relationships, and develop partnerships with Local Authorities to achieve this.

The Trust has been successful in attracting some small project grants, and the aspiration is to secure funding to create additional posts to support and manage “connectors” as well as develop opportunities for care experienced young people, giving them increased opportunities to participate in their own communities and broader life experiences.
