Job Purpose

As our Substance Misuse Nurse, you will provide a range of Health and Wellbeing, and harm reduction interventions to service users in accordance with the agreed model of service delivery. You will deliver high standards of nursing care to substance misusers and be responsible for the assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

Main Responsibilities

You will be an advocate for our patients, working closely with them to identify the physical, psychological, spiritual and social support they need. The postholder will work flexibly providing a high standard of nursing care in a variety of settings, promoting the health and well-being of service users whilst maintaining a safe, caring and therapeutic environment. As a Substance Misuse Nurse you will participate as an active member of the nursing and multi-disciplinary teams, accountable for your practice, and work in

partnership with other health care professionals, psycho-social case managers, patients and others in the delivery of care.

You will support the delivery of specific healthcare clinics or groups, designed to support and educate clients, providing them with practical tools to overcome life’s challenges, this will include pre-session planning and post-session evaluation.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Nurse with Valid registration via the NMC
  • Completed pre-registration Registered Nurse training
  • Demonstrable experience of comprehensive assessment of need including risk assessments
  • Knowledge of safe storage, handling and administration of drugs in particular controlled drugs
  • Knowledge and understanding of NMC code of conduct
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management and its implementation
  • Understanding of the roles, responsibilities and structures of agencies involved in responding to drug and alcohol issues
  • Demonstrable ability to work constructively with a wide variety of groups and individuals in a range of settings and work roles


DESIRABLE SKILLS

Desirable Criteria

  • Studied to Degree Level
  • Post basic study covering substance misuse and blood borne viruses
  • Qualified to perform immunisation and vaccinations
  • Mentorship Course/ENB 998 or equivalent or willingness to undertake
  • Minimum 12 months post registration experience
  • Evidence of personal and professional development in nursing since registration
  • Relevant healthcare experience working within substance misuse
  • Experience of delivering nursing interventions in a community setting
  • Experience in delivering structured psychosocial interventions
  • Knowledge and awareness about current developments in drug and alcohol issues
  • Thorough awareness of drugs and their effects, models of intervention and treatment, relevant legislation and issues and debates in the drugs and alcohol field
  • Experience of planning and providing harm reduction initiatives and recovery solutions in a substance misuse setting

If working in prison setting:

  • Relevant health care experience in a forensic or secure setting
  • Experience of using Methosoft dispensing systems
  • Experience of using SystmOne
  • Relevant health care experience in a forensic or secure setting
