Aberdeen is a globally leading Energy City set in an enviable landscape where coast, city and country meet. It is also on its own critical journey of just transition towards Net Zero emissions, climate resilience and nature recovery. The Council's Strategic Place Planning cluster is seeking a Climate Change Officer for its Climate and Environment Policy Service to help shape and delivery critical parts of that journey. The cluster's remit is to provide strategic leadership across the physical, social and economic activities used to maintain, regenerate and strengthen the place of Aberdeen. The experienced and dynamic officer will provide direction and co-ordination across the Council and City on matters relating to climate change (net zero and resilience) and sustainable development, among other matters.
Job Purpose:
Part of a strategic team collaborating closely with others to develop and embed robust sustainability and climate change principles and practices across the Council. The post holder will also co-ordinate and contribute to the work other Officers, Placements (if any) and project teams. Undertaking collaborative work across strategy and operations, making links with other organisations and activities to ensure compliance with legislation (e.g. Climate Change (Scotland) Acts), and promoting good practice. Focus will be on engaging stakeholders at all levels, working with partners across the Council, with statutory and non-statutory groups, organisations and the citizens of Aberdeen. Responsible to and occasionally deputise for the Senior and Team Leader.
Requirements
The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:
Undergraduate Degree (or equivalent) in Environment or a related discipline (e.g. Geography, Resource Management, etc.)
Membership of an appropriate professional body related to the demands of the post (e.g. IEMA)
Responsibilities
The post holder is expected to demonstrate:
Skills & Experience in:
- Effective communication and negotiation, including managing conflict
- Successful collaborative working with peers and stakeholders to achieve objectives
- Accessing and analysing data and information and producing cogent reports
- Workload and financial planning and management
- Use of ICT systems and programmes
Understanding of:
- Development, implementation, reporting and review of climate, sustainability and related policies, strategies, plans and projects
- Appropriate legislation, procedures, government advice and good practice
Commitment to:
- Making a difference/outcome focused where it counts
- A programme of Continuous Professional Development as required
