The Community Access Team supports adults with learning disabilities across a variety of community settings in Midlothian. The team delivers a programme of activities that reflect and build upon the individual aspirations, strengths, and goals of the participants. These activities include arts & crafts, cooking for healthy eating and running a café, participating in the local community, exercise, and a variety of sports-based activities.
Day Service Officers play a lead role in organising and delivering community-based activities, supporting adults with a learning disability to participate fully and achieve positive outcomes. A key aspect of the role is promoting independence, choice, confidence, and social inclusion, enabling individuals to develop skills and engage meaningfully in their local community.
The role will also involve supporting individuals with their personal care needs in a manner that promotes dignity, respect, privacy, and independence.
You will be required to work across a number of locations in Midlothian and must be able to adapt effectively to a range of settings, activities, and individual support needs. Working as part of a small team Day Service Officers will be expected to work independently, using initiative to plan, organise and deliver person-centred supports that meets the needs and aspirations of service users. They need to be able to work without direct supervision and have a mature and self-reliant approach with the ability to respond to unplanned situations in a calm and flexible manner.
The ability to build positive relationships and manage challenging situations professionally is a key requirement. Day Service Officers should be confident in using effective communication and conflict-resolution skills to de-escalate situations, support positive outcomes, and maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.

KNOWLEDGE
The Jobholder must have, or be committed to achieving, an SVQ level III in Social Care, and have practical experience working in a supportive role with service users. They need to be able to work without direct supervision and have a mature and self-reliant approach with the ability to respond to unplanned situations in a calm and flexible manner.

Please note that it is Midlothian Councils policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.
Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £32,554.06 per annum.
Requirements
This post is considered Regulated Work with Children and Protected Adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act, 2007. Therefore, it is an offence to apply if you are barred from working with children and protected adults.
