Your working pattern is 2 weeks on shift, 1 week of days followed by 1 week of nights, 0630-1830 and 1830-0630 and then 8 weeks off shift. We are happy to talk flexible working, there possible.

The purpose of this role is to maintain a watch keeping service, radar surveillance and operate/monitor the VTS system. To be the initial point of contact for harbour movements and to be the initial communications centre for incidents within Harbour areas and operate procedures and plans appropriately.

The Marine Officers duties will include port control room manning (radar surveillance, VHF operations, CCTV monitoring etc) on a watch keeping basis together with routine operations of the Port VTS information service. The successful applicant will be required to be available on the mainland of Orkney as the roster involves working 12 hour shifts, day and night.

Candidates must hold, as a minimum, an Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate. They must also hold a V-103/1 VTS Operator certificate, or have the ability to obtain it prior to commencing employment, hold a valid medical certificate (ENG1 or equivalent). Served at least as a Watchkeeping Officer on sea going vessels for twelve months or equivalent. Marine Services is committed to funding the associated course fees for the successful applicant. Consideration will be given to candidates with relevant experience and in possession of other appropriate marine certificates.
Ability to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
