You will be based at the Underwood Road Depot and will be responsible for the operational management and supervision of workshop maintenance activities, supporting the delivery of a safe, compliant and effective fleet maintenance service across Renfrewshire Council.

 

The role involves managing, coordinating and directing daily maintenance operations within the vehicle maintenance workshop, ensuring that servicing, repairs, planned maintenance and inspections are undertaken in accordance with the DVSA Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness, statutory requirements and the Council’s Operator Licence undertakings.

 

You will have responsibility for the allocation, scheduling and prioritisation of work for Fleet Engineers and Lead Engineers, ensuring that service delivery requirements are met and vehicle downtime is minimised. This includes assessing operational demands from user departments, adjusting workloads as required, and responding positively to competing and changing priorities.

 

You will work closely with the Fleet Team Leader, contributing to service improvement, operational change and innovation in support of the Council’s green and sustainable fleet objectives. You may be required to represent the service at meetings and, during periods of peak demand, undertake hands-on maintenance duties where necessary.

 

You will have experience of scheduling workload to colleagues, directing/assisting colleagues with their workload and experience of working on various vehicles and carrying out associated repairs, as well as experience of completing associated paperwork Job cards and VI sheets, and the auditing of colleagues’ workload/paper.

 

It is essential that you have Knowledge of DVSA’s guide to roadworthiness and specification of defects for maintenance and MOT preparation, transport and DVSA / DVLA procedure and standards, knowledge of operating diagnostic tools and Microsoft Packages – Excel, Word and Teams, as well as Health and Safety Awareness and understanding to the appropriate role and vehicle repairs.

 

It is also essential that you have the ability to maintain a rational and methodical approach to problem solving as problems arise, and the ability to ensure that company policies are followed regarding vehicle maintenance, accident prevention, fuel efficiency, and other driving practices.
You also must have effective communication skills with employees and external stakeholders and have time management skills, as well as have a flexible approach to sharing duties and working arrangements and the ability to work as part of a team.

 

You will be able to work under pressure and maintain professional attitude, work on your own with minimum supervision, have workload awareness and problem-solving qualities.

 

This role will require you to be part of a standby rota, so you are expected to be available for work outside of regular hours, sometimes at short notice.

 

It is essential that you have City & Guilds Certificate, as well as a LGV licence, Time-served Technician as recognised by an Industry Board and up to date qualifications.

 

You must keep all certifications up to date including certificates, accreditations and/or competence certificates, e.g., IRTEC and/or other relevant membership of trade bodies, and look to improve personal development as opportunities arise.

 

A full Driving Licence is essential.
