Apprenticeships play an important role in our organisation and provide people in our communities with a route in to a challenging and rewarding career with Renfrewshire Council.

We aim to be a true reflection of the communities we serve, which is why encouraging talent from all backgrounds to join our Council is important to us. Apprenticeship opportunities are one of the best ways to equip people with the skills they need to succeed.  You’ll be able to make a difference for our communities, doing work that really matters.

What’s the role?

Whilst undertaking this Modern Apprenticeship, the postholders will work to secure a fair and safe environment for people working and living in Renfrewshire, by the enforcement and application of Trading Standards and Environmental Health law.  This includes advising and assisting businesses, investigating complaints, business inspections and targeted projects.

In Climate and Public Protection, we have several Teams which deliver our services, including:

  • Business Regulation (food law, and occupational health and safety law),
  • Pollution Control & Public Health, and
  • Trading Standards.

During this 2-year modern apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in illicit trade, doorstep crime, consumer product safety, age restricted sales, food safety, pest control, animal welfare and public health investigations.

As part of this Apprenticeship, you’ll undertake a SVQ Level 7 in Regulatory Services. This Apprenticeship will appeal to you if you’re interested in working in, and pursuing a career in, a regulatory environment.

Placements are in the following areas:

  • Trading Standards x 1
  • Environmental Health (Business Regulation & Public Health teams) x 1

What do I need?

Previous experience working within a customer facing environment, IT experience using packages such as Microsoft Teams, Word and Excel, effective time management, verbal, and written communication skills.

You must be self-motivated, flexible and adaptable, ability to work well under supervision and work well as part of a team.

Although having Higher English and Maths is desirable.  We look for Apprentices who can help us deliver our plans for our Renfrewshire citizens and businesses.

During the selection process we’ll look for you to demonstrate the key strengths we know you’ll need to be successful: ambition, integrity, adaptability, personality, ownership, pro-activeness, and willingness to learn.

In accordance with Government Guidelines, you’ll need to be aged 16-24 (at the point of starting the apprenticeship), or if you are disabled or care experienced, you’ll need to be aged between 16-29 (at the point of starting the apprenticeship).
